Are you Considering a Fellowship?

It is important to be aware of the differences between postdoctoral fellow and postdoctoral associate appointments, including how each position is defined; eligibility for benefits; visa status options; and taxation. After reading Defining Postdoc Fellows and Associates, see the information below.

Visa – Postdoctoral fellows are not eligible for H-1B or E-3 sponsorship. Consider both your current status and future needs. See the International Scholars Office information and contact your advisor there for details.

Benefits – See details outlined here, including the summary chart listed.  A change in appointment title from postdoctoral associate to postdoctoral fellow changes your health plan options, and could possibly change your primary care physician and specialist options. Eligibility for other benefits will also change, including retirement, flexible spending accounts, time off provisions, fitness reimbursement, tuition reimbursement, and adoption assistance.

Taxes – Taxation of fellows and associates is different. A change in titles may have an impact on your individual tax situation. See this overview and the additional resources listed on that page.
